When The Husband Is Away

Tyler was out of town last week. He left early Wednesday morning and returned Saturday afternoon. This wasn't our first time apart, but it was my first time staying alone in our apartment. My biggest concern was that I would spend the evenings freaking myself out thinking that I was hearing noises of someone trying to get into our apartment. The likely hood of that actually happening is slim-to-none.

While Tyler was at work on Tuesday he called and asked if I wanted him to bring anything home. My answer is always the same. Dark chocolate! With almonds! Or any other fancy thing inside. My husband is a good husband. He read off the name of a handful of different dark chocolate choices and I said yes to all of them. The dark chocolate would be my reward for hanging out without him.
That evening Tyler also brought home some pepper spray. He had been wanting to get me some and his leaving prompted him to make it happen. Again, we live in a safe neighborhood, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared. Plus, I feel super cool know and can take my pepper spray on runs and walks. I was thoroughly amused when I began to read the description of my pepper spray; military tear gas, red pepper spray and UV dye. Not only will the assailant not be able to see or breath, but he'll be marked too. Victory!
My concerns about freaking myself out at night didn't happen to bad. I know it's something I struggle with so when I got ready for bed I listened to the Rend Collective and talked to Jesus. We also have a ton of pillows so sleeping was a breeze. What do you do when you freak yourself out or are staying home alone?

    1. This was actually my first time having Trader Joes dark chocolate. It was so good. I love dark chocolate so of course I would be a fan. The dark chocolate with whole hazelnuts was probably my favorite! :)

  2. I do the same thing when I'm home alone and I have to admit I usually sleep with like every single light on! I know it's not the most efficient solution but it usually makes me feel better! And yum, the dark chocolate toffee looks amazing!

    1. I had to sleep with lights on too. Every night I left a light on in the living room. We live in an apartment so one light will usually do the trick.

  3. My husband left me one time to go to Vegas with his friends... I had ADT installed before he left :) haha!

    1. Now, that's preparation! Nice. We live in an apartment, so our community is pretty secure. If we were in a house though, I would probably want ADT too.

  4. Before we moved I would sleep on the couch, thinking "the guy breaking in will at least get to me first." (A weird mom protective thing?!) I never slept. At all. But when we moved and bought our "real" house we got ADT installed. Now when he's gone I can actually sleep!

    1. Glad the ADT helped. I slept pretty well, except for the last night. I woke up from a weird dream and was awake for an hour an a half.

  5. I always freak myself out when Jim is gone traveling. I go to bed super late so that I'm really really tired and fall asleep fast. I also usually leave a light on after I've obsessively checked all of the locks, shut all the curtains, and set the alarm.

I used to have pepper spray....I have no idea what happened to it. I really want to get my conceal and carry sometime....Jim has his, but I need to have mine for the times when it's just me without him.

    1. Going to bed was the weirdest part. If the TV was on and I was just hanging out I wouldn't really think about anything. The minute I started getting ready for bed I was automatically trying to listen for things.

  6. Random noises when home alone are totally terrifying, I feel you! But the hardest part, for me, is always falling asleep--it just feels so strange to be in the bed all by myself. Sounds like everything went alright for you, though--the pepper spray thing is awful sweet of him!

    1. It's kind of crazy how when we're alone the smallest sounds freak us out. I might have had a harder time sleeping, but we have tons of pillows and positioned them to take Tyler's spot in the bed. It really helped.

  7. I always listen to music if I get freaked out at night. Turn on pandora and drift!

  8. Mmm dark chocolate with sea salt has been my thing lately!

I was the same way the first time I stayed in our house without Riley. The worst part was that Gidget seemed to be on edge about it too, and would bark at any little noise outside. So not helpful! :) By the second or third time alone though, I was totally enjoying myself!

    1. Dark chocolate with sea salt is basically amazing. The first nights are always the worst. I'm sure the next time he's gone I'll be enjoying all my alone time. :)

  10. Oh gosh. When I first lived by myself in my apartment my last year of college. I slept with my bedroom door closed and locked for about a month (maybe longer). I also had a door that went from my bedroom through the bathroom and back out into the main hallway. I locked that one as well. I checked doors and windows multiple times, especially to my balcony (I was on the bottom floor). But, soon, I got more relaxed and felt at ease. My complex was super safe as well and I was right next to the office. Usually, I would go to sleep listening to music or with a tv show playing.

I do miss living alone though. It was a blast (once I got less paranoid) !

And dark chocolate with anything (almonds preferably) is the best! :)

    1. That is how I felt when I lived in Florida. Right after college I moved to Florida. I didn't live alone, but my roommate was gone all the time. I would always check the locks over and over.

  11. So sweet of your husband!! I usually do pretty well by myself, but occasionally when I hear things I will scare myself into thinking the house will be broken into! Once when I was younger and home alone I locked myself in our attic with the phone--I was convinced a man I saw walking down our driveway was coming to kidnap me. Luckily, I've gotten better since then. :)

    1. I ended up doing pretty well too, especially after I got through the first night. That is one crazy story, I love that you thought to lock yourself in the attic. Good idea. :)

  12. I turn on Jesus music too when I am scared. It helps calm my soul and remind me that I am not alone - Him and His angels are here too.

    1. Jesus music is the best! I prayed angels over our apartment a lot. :)

  13. This post spoke to me in so very many ways. I, too, loooove dark chocolate (and almonds have been my latest craze, too!) and I also get a little freaked out at night, but mostly if I have to walk outside by myself. I've never really been home alone at night before but already know that it's a weird feeling. Music definitely helps! I actually listen to music as I fall asleep because I get easily freaked out by weird noises. :)

    1. So glad it spoke to you. :) Dark chocolate is the best. I remember when I lived in Florida, any time I had to walk from my car to the apartment at night I would always hurry and look around to make sure no one was around.
